is jesus too wimpy? [myspace]

So I was reading this article -

Coughlin contends that the Christian man in America has become passive, straitjacketed by a church culture that insists he emulate a version of Christ who is mild to an extreme, almost “wimpy” in some eyes. This Jesus avoids confrontation, is overly patient and is devoted — to a fault — to the dictum “turn the other cheek.”

Coughlin can be blunt; in his book, he calls this version of Jesus the “Bearded Lady.”

“The fact is,” he told the gathering, “a meek and mild Jesus eventually is a bore. He doesn’t inspire us.” The same applies, he argued, to a meek and mild man. “Those men end up divorced,” Coughlin said. “Their wives find them boring. They have no — I call it the ‘jalapeno factor’ — in them. There’s no inner heat that causes them to actively, assertively go out and do what needs to be done as a man.”

Christian Men…Too Wimpy? [abcnews.go.com]

… it’s weird, this sounds like more of a problem with our culture’s concept of gender stereotypes then a problem with how jesus is represented in modern church. Do we really need something like GodMen where “men can be fully men … when faith gets dangerous”? I guess I would kind of see it as a question of whether you adapt the religion to the culture, or the culture to the religion, where the former would result in a more accessible yet possible less faithful rendition, and the latter would be a lot more challenging but ultimately truer to the original. I don’t know.

… and I’m not even going to point out the obvious male chauvanism in the remarks about what women want from men. Oh wait I just did.

if you’re about to be circumsized “try not to worry” [myspace]

Have I mentioned lately how much I’m against cosmetic foreskin removal? I can’t believe this bullshit:

It’s important to understand that once you’ve been circumcised, your foreskin cannot grow again. You will soon get used to the difference and be happy without it. It is more comfortable in hot weather when you sweat, which is why desert peoples do it. Do expect a bit of teasing when your friends first see your ‘new’ penis. Just smile with their jokes, knowing it is better for you to be circumcised. If they are not circumcised they may sometime have a problem and wish they were. If they have been circumcised they will welcome you to ‘their club’.

Sure – you’re better off with part of your PENIS cut off, and your friends would be too! There are a lot of weird traditional rituals, but fuck, this is sick.

I’m short one foreskin, and I’m kind of pissed about it. Moms and Dads – DON’T CUT UP YOUR BABY BOY’S PENIS! That’s crazy! If there’s some sort of medical thing, then sure, you’ve got no choice. But don’t do it -

  • to show they [boys] belong to a particular religion, race or tribe.
  • because it’s cleaner and prevents or cures health problems
  • people think it looks better too
  • the foreskin is a part of the body we don’t really need and it can cause painful problems
  • it is easy to cut off, and usually done when boys are babies, so they don’t remember it. What you never had you never miss.
  • it’s neat and tidy without loose skin over the end and it helps you to pee better.
  • if you are circumcised you don’t need to think about it because your penis get washed every time you shower or have a bath.
  • you might be circumcised because your dad had it done.
  • often, when one boy needs circumcising, his brothers are circumcised as well.

Come on – all of these reasons boil down to ‘just because’ line of reasoning. This is fucking barbaric.
